Client Overview
US-Based Multi-Brand Home Improvement Retailer Managing Over 100,000 SKUs on Shopify
The client is a U.S.-based online retailer selling home improvement products across categories such as bath fixtures, tiles, and sanitary ware. Their Shopify store has a catalog of 100,000+ SKUs from 70+ brands and supports product sales across multiple online sales channels.
Project Scope
Shopify Product Data Management, SEO, And Inventory Synchronization
The client required comprehensive Shopify management services for streamlining their inventory and optimizing their store’s product listings. The engagement included five primary operational areas:
- Bulk Product Upload and Taxonomy Structuring: Bulk upload and categorize 100,000+ SKUs with standardized product attributes — including images, descriptions, and variant mappings — while maintaining consistent taxonomy across all categories.
- Search Optimized Product Detail Pages: Develop keyword-rich product titles and descriptions for all active listings to improve organic search rankings and drive qualified traffic to the store.
- Vendor Stock Update Management: Consolidate and process inventory updates from 70+ vendors operating in varying formats, ensuring accurate and timely stock data across all listings.
- Multi-Channel Inventory Synchronization: Integrate the Shopify store with Amazon, eBay, and Facebook, and establish real-time inventory sync to prevent overselling and maintain data consistency across all channels.
- Category Structure and Tag Optimization: Correct category misalignments, implement smart tagging logic, and improve filtering configurations to enhance product discoverability and site navigation.
Key Challenges
Shopify Variant Limits, SKU Mismatches, and Multi-Channel Inventory Complexity
The scale of the catalog and the number of connected sales channels created several operational gaps that had to be addressed before the store could function efficiently:
- Product Variant Limits on Shopify: Shopify restricts each product to 100 variants and 3 option types. For a retailer offering home improvement products in multiple attribute combinations — including finish, size, and material — this cap prevented complete product representation and required a solution to maintain full catalog coverage.
- Misaligned Taxonomy and Filtering Logic: Existing category assignments and product tags were mapped incorrectly across the catalog. This disrupted site navigation, reduced search results accuracy, and made it difficult for the targeted audience to quickly find your products.
- Metafield Management at Scale: Updating custom product fields at scale was difficult within Shopify’s native setup. Large volumes of detailed specifications, including structured product attributes and HTML-formatted information, required a more controlled update process.
- Vendor SKU Inconsistencies: Stock data came from 70+ vendors, each using different SKU formats. This made it difficult to match and sync accurate stock levels, resulting in mismatches between Shopify SKUs and vendor SKUs.
- Frequent Stock Updates: The catalog required daily inventory updates across 100,000+ SKUs and 70+ brands. Handling such high volumes of data with time sensitivity created a high-risk update cycle where even small mapping or sync errors could affect stock accuracy.
- Bundled Product Management: The client needed to sell selected products as bundles, requiring Shopify app integrations and configurations for bundle pricing, product relationships, and inventory tracking for these bundled products.
- Multi-Channel Inventory Sync: Inventory data had to stay aligned across Shopify, Amazon, eBay, and Facebook Shop. As they could not ensure real-time sync of stock consistently between channels, the client faced overselling risks, inaccurate availability, and avoidable operational delays.
Solution Delivered
End-To-End Shopify Store Management: Streamlining Product Data Management, SEO, and Multi-Platform Inventory Sync
- 01
Product Listing and Taxonomy Standardization
With over 100,000 SKUs requiring consistent attribute alignment, a scalable upload framework was developed using standardized product templates. As a part of our Shopify listing services, each template was tailored to its brand and category combination, enabling repeatable bulk imports while ensuring accurate product attributes and taxonomy.
- Built master product templates for each brand-category pairing to support consistent, repeatable bulk uploads across the full catalog.
- Used Matrixify to process large-scale imports, including images, metafields, and variant configurations, with automated validation at each stage.
- Defined taxonomy rules to maintain uniform product categorization across Shopify and all connected channels.
- Applied quality control checkpoints at each upload stage to maintain listing completeness and attribute accuracy.
- 02
Category and Tag Optimization
Product categories and tags were not aligned correctly, which affected product visibility and made site navigation less effective. Team4eCom corrected the category structure and added custom rule-based tagging & smarter categorization to make product discovery easier for shoppers.
